AMA Tasting Report
Bordeaux 2019 In Bottle
If I have to choose one vintage among the “Three Musketeers vintages” of 2018, 2019, and 2020 in Bordeaux, I choose the vintage of 2019 without hesitation.
Compared to the vintage of 2018, 2019 is more translucent and elegant; compared to 2020, 2019 is more aromatic and expressive. After much deliberation, my overall rating for the vintage of 2019 arrives at 4.5 stars. The number of tannins shall account for the missing point. In other words, the handling of the maceration would be the killing point for the success of the vintage of 2019.
I tasted more than 800 bottled wines in the vintage of 2019, which is the highest record since I started working in the wine industry. To be more objective, I tried to blind taste as much as possible this time, especially for those Grands Vins in Médoc. At this moment, I would like to express my special thanks to all of the associations and wine merchants who helped me to assemble the tasting samples. Thanks for your kindest support for a young Chinese Wine Critic.
According to my tastings, approximately 400 wines above 90 points have been entered in my selection, and each wine is a good example in its respective style. I highly recommend my friends of buyers to pay great attention to these selected wines.
Besides, as an attempt to save your time and energy to sort out your favorites, I am here to offer you an extraordinary gift: AMA Selections, which will be released next week. The ancient Chinese mythology and culture inspired me of naming the selections, so I’ve borrowed the three typical images respectively, which are lyrically poetic and imaginative:
Kunlun Selection
Outstanding wines scored above 98 points, undoubtedly top collectors’ best love.
Kunlun: The Kunlun Mountains, known as “the ancestor of all mountains” and the “Dragon vein of Huaxia”, is the most divine Mountain Range in China, just like Mont Olympus in Greece. It holds a special place in Chinese mythology and culture.
Hidden Dragon Selection
Exceptionally distinguish Grand Crus that are not yet broadly known in the Chinese market with great potential, fairly valuable for investment. Highly recommended for amateurs.
Hidden Dragon: The Chinese dragon – Loong is a legendary creature in Chinese culture. It symbolizes power, honor, dignity, and good luck.
Hidden Jade Selection
Top cost-effective wines with premium quality, which are comparable to the famous wineries. You could casually demonstrate your extraordinary taste and ability to choose good wines.
Hidden Jade: In Chinese culture, jade symbolizes beauty, nobility, preciousness, and purity. A piece of uncarved jade is a future gem.
In addition to the previous selections, I would like to highlight my three 100-points-Châteaux:
Château L’Église-Clinet
Château Léoville Las Cases
Château Mouton Rothschild
Château L’Église-Clinet has the magic to bring you back to your childhood. When I tasted this wine, I felt like a child who would never grow up.
As for Château Léoville Las Cases, it bestows you with a jeweled crown with countless details and dazzling glamour. It grants you the impression that the whole world is under your control.
When it comes to Château Mouton Rothschild, its extreme balance of power and grace will make you feel like you are dancing on the needle tip.
We put great efforts into this annual report. I am sure the three-month work of the entire AMA team would bring you the most authentic Bordeaux experience.
